ruisbestuiving is a new project by glimworm, a radio show here in ghent. they released a new record with collaborations between several belgian artists. the covers for the 400 lp's of this record were made by 400 different artists. this is my copy, which you can see, together with the 399 other ones, in the exhibition on the 1st and 2nd of september in DOK (ghent). the day after (3/9) you can listen to the songs and buy the records on the release party.

this week i have been working in werkkamp 011. it's an old bastion near antwerp, where a lot of artists have their own space where they can work on new projects. i'm working there together with oshin albrecht, she's working on an installation/performance in this old building. i'm trying to adapt her working process in drawings.

Last night, i could smell in my dream. weird.

Mijn mama en ik zijn grote tafels aan het dekken. Beetje bij beetje komen allemaal mensen binnen, die aan de tafels gaan zitten. Ze hebben allemaal grote regenjassen aan en laarzen vol modder. Iedereen is natgeregend, en niemand zegt iets. Ik ga aan één van de tafels zitten, en ruik opeens dat er iets begint te stinken. De geur wordt steeds sterker. Ik zeg "het stinkt hier naar dode ratten" en vraag aan iedereen aan tafel om hun laarzen uit te doen, en te kijken of er niets aan het schoenzolen is blijven plakken. Iedereen doet zijn laarzen uit, en begint in de modder die eraan is blijven hangen te wroeten. Ik zie dat er op de onderkant van de laars van de vrouw naast mij iets plakt. Ik haal het ervan, omdat ik denk dat het een lijkje is van muis of een rat is. Maar als ik de modder eraf heb geschraapt zie ik dat het een beentje is van een meisje. Het heeft een lange kous aan en een zwart schoentje met veters. Het voelt zo slap en warm aan in mijn hand. Ik denk “dit is niet echt, het is alleenmaar een poppenbeen”. Maar als ik de kous naar beneden strop, zie ik het bloederig stuk waar het been is afgesneden. Als ik de andere laars van de vrouw bekijk, zie ik dat het andere beentje aan de onderkant daarvan plakt. Ik hou de beide beentjes in mijn hand. Plots zie ik in een flits het meisje voor me, het is donker, en ze is aan het stappen in de modder, met haar papa die enkele meters voorop loopt. De man draait zich om, loopt naar het meisje toe en roept dat als ze niet kan volgen, ze maar niet meer hoeft te lopen. Hij neemt een mes, en snijdt haar beentjes eraf.

Ik zit nog steeds aan tafel, iedereen staart naar mijn hand met daarin de beentjes, ik weet niet wat ik ermee moet doen. Het enige waar ik aan kan denken is die stank.

this reaction on a blogpost from laura ferrara made me think about my love for deer.

i considered the disney bambi film (but when i was a child, i never really liked disney films with only animals). but then i remebered this story by the Grimm brothers: "Broertje en Zusje" ("Brüderchen und Schwesterchen"), it was one of my all-time favourite stories about a brother and a sister who are running away from their stephmother. they run into the woods, and when the night comes, the brother's so thirsty they have to search for a spring. but their stephmother had bewitched all the springs in the woods.

They found a spring, glistening as it ran over the stones. The brother was about to drink from it, but his sister heard how its rushing sound said, "Whoever drinks from me will become a tiger. Whoever drinks from me will become a tiger."

Then the sister cried out, "Please, brother, do not drink, or you will become a wild animal and tear me to pieces."

The brother did not drink, although he was very thirsty, but said, "I will wait for the next spring."

When they came to the second spring the sister heard it say as well, "Whoever drinks from me will become a wolf. Whoever drinks from me will become a wolf."

Then the sister cried out, "Please, brother, do not drink, or you will become a wolf and eat me."

The brother did not drink, and said, "I will wait until we come to the next spring, but then I must drink, say what you will, for I am very thirsty."

When they came to the third spring the sister heard how its rushing sound said, "Whoever drinks from me will become a deer. Whoever drinks from me will become a deer."

i've always been extremely fascinated by the story of lewis carroll. i've read the book several times, and i am trying to collect as many film adaptations as i can get. i have written my bachelor- and masterpaper about the film adaptations, but i keep on searching for more.

this is the first adaptation ever made. it was made in 1903, and at this time it was the longest film ever made. there are no actors, but only friends of the director and crew members.

this version is made in 1949, it is completely unknown because the film was boycotted by the disney company, who were also making their adaptation at the time. besides alice herself there are no actors, but only animated puppets. they are really frightening, that's why i love this version so much. sweet and scaring at the same time.

the 1966 adaptation directed by jonathan miller is one of my favourites. the story is very abstract an surreal. alice is played by anne-marie mallik, and i love her -rather bored- interpretation of the alice-figure.
miller said once: “It’s a film about children, not explicitly for them”. the most accurate 'alice in wonderland' quote i've ever heard.

and then, of course, my favourite version by jan svankmajer. the most frightening, but also the most interesting.

“alice thought to herself, now you will see a film. for children…perhaps. perhaps, but i forgot. now you must close your eyes, otherwise you won’t see anything.”

(i did not see the recent tim burton version. but i don't know if i want to. i don't really like most of the tim burton films. and i'm getting sick of al this sudden alice-media-hype-things)

someone gave my mother an incredible collection of shark teeth. it reminds me of my own collection, which exists of 5 teeth.
i have always been a very bad collector. every week i started a new one. (stamps, shark teeth, little rocks, music boxes, the last smarties out of every tube, candy wrappers, porcelain dolls, forms to fill in your name, a piece of toilet paper from every toilet i went to, images of virgin mary, ...)

this night i dreamt a filmscenario, the images were moving pencil-drawings. it was a very short sequence, but one of the most inspiring dreams i've ever had. i made some sketches after i woke up, because maybe, some day, i'd like to make a film about this dream.
